Chimes echoed at his touch.
The street behind him sat deadly quiet, though for 3am he supposed that should be expected. He wondered what she was doing awake at all.
He listened for any movement inside. No reaction, no sound.
He pressed again and the chimes reverberated through the house and out to the street behind him. Finally, muffled footsteps approached, creaking as she walked down the stairs.
His job was not to question why, just to do.
He turned again to probe the street behind, paranoia taking hold, and settled. In a few seconds, it would all be over.
