She always read that shock silenced everything, but that mercy eluded her. She heard every amplified gasp for life, saw every twisted spasm, tasted every metallic drop of the poor boy’s blood.

She searched the roadside for anything that might save him, desperately avoiding his accusatory stare, but stopped at her daughter’s cries coming from the back seat of the now badly-damaged SUV.

She had been over the limit, just; an honest resolution meant prison, her daughter in foster care, their lives ruined. But she could leave…
