Ingrid’s muscles relaxed; her breathing slowed. Surely this was not how it ended. All those thousands of miles, all those discoveries, thwarted, here… by him.
She thought of the family she’d left behind; long dead now, lost in the interstellar time dilation. Had they forgiven her in the end, understood why she had to go, why she had to be the one?
Light flickered in the darkness of the water, as though instigated by her sadness.
Another light, brighter, moved as though alive, pushing her upwards. His dim outline above looked panicked; the planet, somehow, was helping her fight back.
